DEAR READERS | ||
Our March agenda included a meeting of our PFI Research Advisory Committee; an annually recurring event at which current projects and those in the planning stage, as well as ideas for new research projects, are all presented. Decisions made here set the trend for our medium-term focus and have the prime objective of providing our clients and members with really useful results. Be inspired by a selection of current PFI research topics!

OEKO-TEX®: 2019 Revisions LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX® and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® were revised at the beginning of 2019 to conform to the requirements of the new “REACH Annex XVII CMR legislation” (Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/1513). The revisions came into force on 1 April 2019. In contrast, the new limits for the pertinent CMR substances will only become legally binding from 1 November 2020.

STeP by OEKO-TEX® for Leather Production In the summer of 2019, STeP assessment will be extended to cover leather production facilities. The name will then also change: “Sustainable Textile Production” will become “Sustainable Textile and Leather Production” – the product name STeP will be retained.

New Legal Provisions of Relevance for Footwear and Leather Production In addition to the regular update of the SVHC candidate list in January 2019, October and December 2018 saw two new entries in Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation regarding 33 CMR compounds and four phthalate plasticisers of relevance for materials widely used in footwear and clothing. Although the legal amendments do not come into force until July and November 2020, respectively, REACH-compliant manufacturing of goods and materials needs a certain lead time. It is therefore advisable to consider the
new regulatory limits immediately, particularly in the case of raw
materials and components.
PHYSICAL TESTING | ||
October 2018 saw publication of the new standard “DIN EN IEC 61340-4-3:2018-10 Electrostatics – Standard-Test Methods for Specific Applications – Footwear”. It replaces the previous standard dating from the year 2002.
